NJCAA mainstay Beck announces retirement
Charlotte, NC – The NJCAA has announced the March 2022 retirement of NJCAA Vice President for Compliance and Eligibility Brian Beck. Beck's retirement next year caps a career that encompasses over 31 consecutive years of service and leadership within the NJCAA, including over 14 years as its head of compliance and eligibility in the National Office.
A graduate and former student-athlete of James Madison University (VA), Beck received his Master's in Business Administration (M.B.A.) from Midway University. The Virginia native has been involved with the NJCAA in various roles since 1993, getting his career started at Hagerstown Community College (MD). Beck held various coaching positions with the Hawks and most notably as head softball coach (1997-2003) where he accumulated over 150 victories at the Division I and Division II levels while leading multiple teams to national championship tournaments. On the administration side, Beck served as assistant athletic director as well as athletic director at Hagerstown.
Beck also served as the Assistant Men's Region Director for NJCAA Region 20 and the vice president of the Garden State Athletic Conference (NJCAA Region 19), encompassing Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
Prior to joining the NJCAA National Office, Beck served as the assistant director of athletics at Gloucester County College (NJ), now RCSJ-Gloucester, for two years (2006-08). During his time with the Roadrunners, Beck monitored academic requirements and grades of approximately 180 student-athletes, while facilitating tutoring services. The college's retention rate of student-athletes consistently exceeded 92 percent during Beck's tenure.
"The NJCAA congratulates Brian Beck on a standout career with the association and would not be where it is today if it were not for his unwavering dedication to its student-athletes and member colleges," stated Dr. Christopher Parker, NJCAA President & CEO. "We cannot thank Mr. Beck enough for his leadership and commitment and wish him the very best in retirement."
As one of the longest-tenured staff members in the NJCAA National Office, Beck has worked his way up through various positions beginning as the Director of Eligibility, Assistant Executive Director, Chief Operations Director, and ultimately to his current role as Vice President for Compliance and Eligibility.
"Beginning with the 2022 calendar year, it will be my 32nd year involved in the NJCAA, I feel it is time to step aside and open up some space for the association to further evolve and grow," stated Beck. "I want to thank Coach Jim Brown for initially hiring me as a young professional at Hagerstown and for giving me an opening to get involved in what became my life's work. The NJCAA holds a special place in my life, and I can't thank all of my friends and colleagues enough for the pleasure of working together throughout my career. You will all be missed."
Throughout 14 years working at the association's headquarters in Colorado Springs, CO, and Charlotte, NC, Beck has been instrumental in the progression and fine-tuning of the NJCAA's compliance and eligibility processes. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and cancellation of various sport seasons, Beck spearheaded efforts alongside the NJCAA Eligibility Committee and NJCAA Board of Regents to best serve and advocate for NJCAA student-athletes and member colleges. Beck has grown the eligibility and compliance department and mentored countless driven individuals along the way inside and outside of his division. Most recently in June 2021, Beck was part of the leadership team largely responsible for the NJCAA Administrative Portal rollout, phases, and implementation.
