
#NJCAAReplay Game of the Week Oct. 1
On Thursday, Oct. 1, the NJCAA Network, the new home for NJCAA digital content will re-air the 2010 NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship final between Howard (TX) and Three Rivers (MO). The title game featured former Howard student-athlete Jae Crowder, NBA forward with the Miami Heat who is set to compete in the 2020 NBA Finals this week, along with legendary Three Rivers head coach Gene Bess.
The 2010 championship game, held in Hutchinson's Sports Arena earned the Hawks and head coach Mark Adams their first men's basketball national title by defeating Three Rivers in an overtime thriller, 85-80.
The Hawks trailed the Raiders for much of the game, but emobodied a pivotal comback with less than five minutes to go as the score stood 65-55. Down 10, Howard put together a 16-5 run on the Raiders with much-needed offensive performances by guards Josh Watkins and Lamont Austin to get back in the game. A tip-in by Jae Crowder almost took the title, but it came after the buzzer at the end of regulation, forcing the two teams to overtime play. In the extra period, the Hawks overcame tribulation to finish the season with a victory and 33-2 record.
With 27 points and 12 rebounds, Crowder was named to the All-Tournament Team and was later recognized as the NJCAA DI Men's Basketball Player of the Year. A team effort by the Hawks in the 2010 tournament led Howard to a historical championship title in 2010, just its second national tournament appearance. Crowder, now with the Miami Heat went on to play at Marquette (WI) NCAA Division I school in the Big East Conference alongside NBA great Jimmy Butler, also with the Miami Heat.
The Howard and Three Rivers matchup is the third of the reoccurring NJCAA Replay Game of the Week, highlighting one flashback game every Thursday night on the NJCAA Network. Fans are able to engage and follow along on social media each week leading up to the primetime event.
